Jaw Spasms

Jaw spasms are a common problem suffered by millions of people world wide, but surprisingly little is known about how to prevent them from happening. Many scientists have initiated studies centered around jaw spasms, as well as TMJ, a disorder of the Temporomandibular Joint. However, it is possible to soothe the pain of jaw spasms.

In order to adequately treat the pain that is experienced by sufferers of jaw spasms, it is important to understand the cause of these issues. When jaw muscles are stretched, overstretched, or locked in one position for an unusually long period of time, it is common for the jaw to spasm as a result. Undue stress on the muscles of the jaw will cause pain and discomfort in any individual, but if left unchecked, this can lead to the TMJ disorder mentioned above. TMJ is a bit more severe than the on and off spasming the average person will experience during his or her lifetime; TMJ is characterized by regular spasms that are more intense.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research advises one to eat soft foods during periods of discomfort, as these are less likely to “tire” your jaw muscles. It is also recommended to avoid chewing gum for long stretches of time, and to be mindful of jaw clenching or teeth grinding, as these both strain the jaw.

Alleviating the pain completely via use of medication is similarly easy; it is not uncommon for a sufferer of jaw spasms to have to purchase an over the counter pain relief pill such as aspirin or acetaminophen. In some of the more severe cases, it is suggested that the person consider physical therapy, or having a splint made to stabilize the jaw. This last option is especially useful for people whose jaw spasms have gotten to levels of frequency and intensity that are similar to those experienced by people with TMJ.

Misdiagnosis is not a common occurrence with this particular condition, and a doctor will be able to offer many more options for care and treatment of jaw spasms than one can simply find at home. It may be necessary to use a prescription pain medication or ask the doctor for referrals to physical therapists who specialize in the face and jaw. In some cases it is necessary to have surgery performed on the area. Because of this, it is wise to contact a medical professional before attempting to treat the problem at home.
